$150M in Funding Available for Rural Infrastructure Upgrades

Enhancing Wisconsin’s Rural Road Networks with Historic Funding

Rural roads are the backbone of Wisconsin’s agricultural industry, supporting farmers, supply chains, and local communities. However, aging infrastructure and weight restrictions on critical roads and bridges have posed challenges for transportation efficiency and economic growth.

To address these issues, the Wisconsin Agricultural Roads Improvement Program (ARIP) is offering a one-time $150 million enhancement to upgrade rural Class-B roads, weight-restricted roads, bridges, and culverts across the state. This funding presents a significant opportunity for local governments to improve road conditions and strengthen Wisconsin’s rural transportation networks.

Program Overview: Who Can Apply?

ARIP provides grants covering up to 90% of project costs for eligible municipalities, counties, and local governments in Wisconsin. The goal of the program is to support infrastructure projects that enhance safety, efficiency, and accessibility for the agricultural and rural sectors.

Projects funded under ARIP can include:
Reconstruction and resurfacing to extend the lifespan of critical roadways.
Upgrades to weight-restricted roads and bridges to accommodate heavier loads.
Culvert replacements to prevent flooding and road damage.
Safety improvements such as road widening, guardrails, and modernized infrastructure.

Funding Details & Key Deadlines

ARIP grants will be distributed through two funding intakes in 2025:

  • $50M Intake – Application Deadline: April 5, 2025
  • $100M Intake – Application Deadline: September 30, 2025

Applicants who previously applied for funding under the most recent round (separate from the $150M available in 2025) may have the opportunity to roll their applications forward into the next $50M intake for reconsideration.

Why This Funding Matters for Wisconsin’s Rural Communities

Aging road infrastructure and outdated weight restrictions pose challenges for farmers, local businesses, and emergency services operating in rural Wisconsin. The ARIP funding will enable municipalities to:

  • Improve agricultural supply chain efficiency by allowing for larger transport loads.
  • Enhance road safety for rural communities and commercial vehicles.
  • Reduce long-term maintenance costs through durable, modern infrastructure.
  • Support local economies by making rural areas more accessible for commerce.

Investing in road improvements not only benefits farmers and industries but also enhances the quality of life for residents by ensuring safer and more reliable transportation.
