Up to $50M Available for Canadian Municipalities Investing in Active Transportation Projects
In support of Canada’s National Active Transportation Strategy, the first-ever Active Transportation Fund will provide $400M over five years to support a modal shift away from cars and toward active transportation. This funding will support projects that build new and expanded networks of pathways, bike lanes, trails and pedestrian bridges in addition to supporting active transportation planning and stakeholder engagement activities.
Eligible Applicants
Those eligible to apply for funding are:
- Municipal, local, and regional governments
- Provincial and territorial governments
- Public sector bodies, such as:
- Municipally-owned corporations
- Provincial or territorial organizations that deliver municipal services
- Any other form of local governance that exists outside of municipality descriptions
- Not-for-profit organizations

Funding Details

- Successful applicants can receive up to 100% of eligible costs, with a maximum of $50,000
- Capital Projects
- Successful applicants can receive a maximum of $50M
- The maximum contribution rate from the program is
- Municipal projects I provinces: 60%
- Municipal projects in territories: 75%
- Projects in Indigenous communities: 100%
- Provincial assets: 40%
Deadline
The deadline to apply to the Active Transportation Fund is March 31, 2022.
