Fueling Health and Happiness: Active Communities Grants Unleash the Power of Local Initiatives in B.C.

Local and Indigenous governments in British Columbia are invited to participate in the Active Communities Grants program, an initiative aimed at bolstering access to physical activity within their communities. This program is a vital component of the broader effort to promote public health, prevent chronic diseases, and enhance the well-being of individuals both physically and mentally.
 
With a focus on inclusivity, local needs, and cultural considerations, the Active Communities Grants program, administered by the BC Alliance for Healthy Living Society (BCAHL), has allocated $1.5 million in funding to support community projects that break down barriers to physical activity and encourage active living.

Eligibility Requirements
 

Eligible applicants for the B.C. Active Communities Program include:

  • Local Governments: Municipalities, cities, and townships within British Columbia.
    Indigenous Governments: Indigenous communities, bands, and organizations located in the province.



Eligible Activities

The program encourages projects and initiatives that:

  1. Improve equity in physical activity opportunities within the community.
    Respond to local needs, contexts, and cultures.
  2. Reduce financial and transportation barriers to physical activity.
    Install equipment in central, easily accessible locations.
  3. Modify the physical environment to provide easy access to physical activity

Project examples include:

  • Developing inclusive programs catering to local needs and cultures
  • Implementing measures to reduce financial and transportation barriers
  • Installing state-of-the-art equipment in central, easily accessible locations
  • Modifying the physical environment for seamless access to physical activity
  • Encouraging innovative and community-specific approaches to promoting active living
