Municipalities Can Now Apply to Have 40% of Project Costs Funded Through DMAF

In an effort to combat the impacts of climate change within communities across Canada, the Federal Government has renewed the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund with an additional $2B.

This funding is intended to support public infrastructure projects that will mitigate current and future climate-related risks and disasters triggered by climate change, such as floods, wildland fires, droughts, and seismic events.

Funding will be distributed through two streams:

  • Small Scale Project Stream
    • Projects with total eligible costs between $1M and $20M
  • Large Scale Project Stream
    • Projects with total eligible costs of $20M and above

Eligible Applicants

  • A province or territory; or a municipal or regional government
  • A public sector body that is established by – or under – provincial or territorial statute or by regulation
  • An authorized Canadian public or not-for-profit institution (when working in collaboration with a municipality)
  • A private sector body, including for-profit organizations and not-for-profit organizations
  • An Indigenous governing body


Eligible Projects

Taking into consideration current and potential future impacts of climate change, projects must be aimed at reducing the socio-economic, environmental, and cultural impacts triggered by natural hazards and extreme weather events. Eligible projects include:

  • New construction of public infrastructure
  • Modification or reinforcement of existing public infrastructures

 

Eligible Costs

Costs that are eligible through this funding opportunity include but are not limited to: 

  • Design and planning
  • Capital costs
  • Expenses related to specific project requirements

The percentage of costs eligible for funding varies depending on the applicant:

  • Provinces: Up to 50%
  • Territories: Up to 75%
  • Indigenous Recipients: Up to 100%
  • Municipalities and regional governments, public sector bodies, post-secondary institutions, and not-for-profits organizations:
    Up to 40%
  • For-profit organizations (conditions apply): Up to 25%

Deadline

  • Large-Scale Project Stream: October 15, 2021
  • Small-Scale Project Stream: November 15, 2021
