Maximum Funding: Up to $500,000 | Purpose: Strengthening Local Food Systems Across Canada
The Local Food Infrastructure Fund (LFIF), administered by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, is now accepting applications from community-based organizations working to reduce food insecurity and improve access to safe, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food.
This program aims to strengthen community food systems by funding projects that support food production, infrastructure, and distribution, with a particular focus on equity-deserving groups, including Indigenous and Black communities.
The LFIF supports locally driven projects that:
Improve community food security
Increase the availability and accessibility of nutritious and culturally appropriate food
Expand food production capacity and distribution networks
Address barriers faced by marginalized populations
Priority will be given to projects that are led by, or primarily serve, Indigenous and Black communities.
Funding Available: $25,000 – $100,000 in grant funding
Purpose: Supports projects in a single community with one or a few infrastructure or equipment needs
Requirements: Must include a production element (e.g., greenhouses, garden boxes, hydroponic systems)
Intake Period:
• August 25 – September 19, 2025
Total Funding: $23.5 million available over 3 years
Funding Available: $150,000 – $500,000 in non-repayable contributions
Purpose: Supports projects with multiple infrastructure/equipment needs, strengthened by at least two partnerships to enhance community food security
Requirements: Must include a production element and demonstrate broader community impact
Intake Period: January 13 – February 28, 2025
Total Funding: $19.2 million available over 2 years
LFIF supports a wide range of infrastructure and equipment purchases, including:
Garden boxes, beds, tools, and greenhouses
Irrigation systems, wells, and composting systems
Vertical and hydroponic gardens
Tractors and other heavy farm equipment
Hunting and fishing equipment (excluding firearms and ammunition)
Seeds, soil, fruit trees, and compost (initial year only)
October 1 – 31, 2024: First intake for Small-Scale Projects
January 13 – February 28, 2025: Intake for Large-Scale Projects
August 25 – September 19, 2025: Second intake for Small-Scale Projects
Program End Date: March 31, 2027
