Federal Government Announces New Zero Emission Transit Fund

$2.75B is Now Available to Help Communities Invest in Zero Emission Transit

In support of promoting a cleaner environment, the Canadian Government has announced the Zero Emission Transit Fund (ZETF), valued at $2.75B over 5 years. This initiative will support public transit and school bus operators across Canada who are seeking to electrify their operations, build charging and support infrastructure, and upgrade facilities. 

The ZETF will help remove key barriers impeding the deployment of as many as 5,000 zero emission buses by 2026.

 

Eligible Projects

There are two project categories that are eligible for funding: 

  • Planning and Design Projects
    • Eligible projects include: studies, modelling and feasibility analysis that will support the development of future larger scale capital projects
  • Capital Projects
    • Eligible capital projects include: buses, charging and refueling infrastructure, and other ancillary infrastructure needs

 

Eligible Applicants 

Eligible recipients under the ZETF include:

  • Province and territories
  • Municipal or regional governments
  • Transit agencies
  • Public bodies (e.g., school boards)
  • Private-sector school bus operators
  • Private accessible transit transportation providers (e.g., paratransit services)
  • Indigenous Governing Bodies

Funding Details

  • The maximum contribution towards Planning Projects is 80% of the total eligible costs
  • The maximum contribution towards Capital Projects is 50% of the total eligible costs

 

Deadline

  • Non-for-profits organizations and academic institutions applying for funding must have applications submitted by September 10, 2021, 23:59 PDT
  • Applications from other eligible recipients, such as municipalities, will be accepting on a continuous intake until the funding available has been fully allocated
