Up to $10M in funding to support real-world deployment of industrial technologies that reduce emissions and drive economic competitiveness in Alberta

Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) has launched its 2026 Industrial Transformation Challenge, committing $50 million to support transformative projects that reduce emissions while enhancing the competitiveness of Alberta’s industrial and natural resource sectors.

This program is designed for organizations with ready-to-deploy or near-commercial technologies that can be demonstrated in real-world environments. With a strong emphasis on measurable environmental impact and economic value, this intake represents a significant opportunity for innovators and industry leaders to scale solutions that drive meaningful change.

Program Overview

The Industrial Transformation Challenge focuses on later-stage technologies that are ready for validation, demonstration, or first-of-kind deployment. All funded projects must be executed within Alberta, though applicants can be located globally if they demonstrate a clear value proposition for the province.

ERA is targeting projects that align with key priority areas, including:

  • Digital solutions for emissions reduction
  • Process innovation and industrial energy systems
  • Agriculture and agri-food technologies
  • Advanced materials and circular economy solutions
  • Forestry and forest products
  • Land, air, and water innovation
  • Power grid innovation

This call emphasizes collaboration across industry, academia, and public sector stakeholders, encouraging partnerships that can accelerate commercialization and maximize impact.

Funding Details

Funding is structured to support large-scale, high-impact initiatives:

  • Up to 50% of eligible project costs
  • Maximum funding: $10 Million per project
  • Minimum request: $500,000
  • Total funding pool: $50 Million

Projects must demonstrate strong alignment with ERA’s objectives, including emissions reduction, economic benefits, and scalability.

Eligible Applicants

The program is open to a broad range of applicants, including:

  • Innovators and technology developers
  • Industrial facility owners and operators
  • Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
  • Industry associations
  • Research institutions and universities
  • Municipalities and not-for-profit organizations
  • Indigenous organizations
  • Government research labs and individuals

Applicants are not required to be based in Alberta, but must clearly demonstrate how their project will deliver value within the province.

Eligible Projects

To qualify, projects must involve technology demonstration in a relevant environment and fall within one of the following stages:

  • Field Test or Pilot
  • Commercial Demonstration
  • First-of-kind Commercial Deployment

Importantly, the program does not support standalone research and development, feasibility studies, or roadmap development. Instead, ERA is seeking projects that are ready to move beyond concept and into real-world application and scale.

Key Requirements

Successful applications will clearly demonstrate:

  • Deployment within Alberta
  • Measurable emissions reduction outcomes
  • Economic and industry benefits
  • Technical feasibility and readiness
  • Strong project partnerships where applicable

Key Deadline

  • Expression of Interest (EOI): June 17, 2026

Given the competitive nature of ERA funding, early preparation is essential to ensure a strong submission.
