Driving Sustainable Change in Canada’s Industrial Sector

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has announced that the third intake of the Green Industrial Facilities and Manufacturing Program (GIFMP) is set to open soon. This program is a key initiative under Canada’s effort to support net-zero industrial transformation, helping facilities across the country reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and optimize energy use.

In this upcoming round, only the Industrial Facility Track will be available, providing focused support for energy management solutions designed to improve energy performance, enhance competitiveness, and lower emissions in industrial settings.

Program Overview: Enhancing Industrial Energy Performance

The GIFMP is a federally funded program designed to:

  • Support the implementation of energy efficiency projects

  • Encourage the adoption of ISO 50001-compliant energy management systems

  • Provide funding for technical assessments, capacity building, and retrofits

  • Ultimately reduce GHG emissions from Canada’s most energy-intensive sectors

With funding available for both equipment and system-level improvements, the program offers significant value for facilities looking to take meaningful steps toward decarbonization.

Third Intake: What We Know So Far

While a full call for proposals has yet to be released, here is what NRCan has confirmed:

  • The Industrial Facility Track will be the sole focus of this intake

  • The goal remains to maximize energy performance and industrial competitiveness

  • Additional details, including application deadlines and eligibility criteria, will be shared once the intake officially launches

Organizations interested in applying are encouraged to begin preparing now by identifying eligible projects and compiling documentation to support their application.

Who Should Prepare to Apply

The GIFMP is well-suited for:

  • Industrial manufacturers looking to reduce operational costs and emissions

  • Facilities in mining, food processing, forestry, and other energy-intensive industries

  • Organizations aiming to implement energy management systems or pursue energy retrofits

While eligibility details for this round will be confirmed at launch, past intakes have welcomed a variety of facility operators, utilities, energy service providers, and industry associations.

Why Act Now

Although the official call has not yet opened, funding programs like GIFMP are highly competitive and operate on limited budgets. Early preparation is critical.

Facilities that proactively begin developing project scopes, estimating costs, and gathering internal support will be in the best position to submit a strong application as soon as intake opens.
