Manitoba Opens SCAP Research & Innovation Stream to Accelerate Agri-Food Advancements

The Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (SCAP) Manitoba – Research and Innovation Stream is now accepting Letters of Intent (LOIs) for projects that will drive innovation, strengthen resilience, and enhance long-term sustainability across the province’s agri-food sector.

With a clear focus on science-based solutions, this program is designed to support organizations developing new technologies, improving production methods, and addressing both current and emerging challenges in agriculture.

Maximum Funding: Up to $500,000 | Purpose: Advancing Research, Innovation, and Capacity Building in Manitoba’s Agri-Food Sector

Program Overview

The Research and Innovation Stream supports projects that fast-track the pace of innovation within Manitoba’s agriculture and agri-food industries. Funding is available for initiatives that generate new knowledge, develop practical solutions, and build long-term research capacity.

All supported projects must begin after April 1, 2027 and be completed by December 31, 2027, ensuring a structured and forward-looking approach to sector development.

Two Streams of Support

Basic and Applied Research

This stream supports both early-stage discovery research and applied projects aimed at solving real-world industry challenges. Eligible projects may include:

  • Development of new agricultural technologies or processes
  • Research to improve productivity, sustainability, or efficiency
  • Solutions addressing climate-related risks and disruptions

Capacity Building

This stream focuses on strengthening Manitoba’s research infrastructure by supporting:

  • Purchase of specialized research equipment
  • Training required to effectively utilize new technologies

Who Can Apply

A broad range of organizations are eligible to participate, including:

  • Agri-processors
  • Indigenous groups
  • Industry organizations
  • Primary producers
  • Research institutions
  • Service providers

This diversity of applicants ensures collaboration across the value chain and supports innovation at multiple levels of the sector.

Eligible Expenses

Funding can be used to support key project costs, including:

  • Incremental salaries and wages
  • Subcontracted services and professional fees
  • Materials and supplies
  • Knowledge transfer and dissemination activities
  • Capital equipment (for capacity building projects)
  • Provincial Sales Tax (PST)

To be considered, projects must align with at least one of the following priority areas:

  • Agri-resource management
  • Economic and market analysis

  • Processing and value-added initiatives
