April is Earth Month—an excellent time to acknowledge our relationship with the environment and to consider how we do business.

Sustainable investments, or “going green,” can provide incredible benefits for the planet and for grant and tax incentive opportunities.

Recent Federal Budget announcements demonstrate a remarkable commitment to green investments and new business incentives. To support the growth of a clean economy, Budget 2023 proposes new business grants to encourage investment in Canada, to enhance environmental tech leadership, and to create well-paid jobs for Canadian workers. Businesses or industries investing in green innovation, new facilities, or new tech/equipment that reduces an overall carbon footprint through energy efficiency can find diverse programs for financial support.

Incorporating an environmentally conscious aspect, with demonstrable outcomes, to capital projects will increase the likelihood of grant support for your investment. In addition to project funding, tax credits are available for businesses in clean manufacturing, renewables, recycling, clean fuels, and more. Be sure to explore your eligibility

GrantMatch has highlighted some standout grant programs from the 2023 Federal Budget toward a “Growing, Clean Economy”:

  • 15% Tax Credit for Clean Electricity for building or refurbishing clean electricity investments including: solar, hydro, wave, nuclear, abated natural gas, stational electricity storage and transmission equipment. Additional only to the Atlantic Investment Tax Credit. Program to end in 2034.

  • New Investment Tax Credit for Clean Technology Manufacturing of 30% for the cost of investments in new machinery and equipment used to manufacture or process clean technologies or recycle key minerals (including critical minerals, renewable energy, nuclear, electrical storage, zero emission vehicles, and EV batteries).

  • Expansion of eligibility for the Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit, announced in 2022 to support businesses adopting clean technologies, to include geothermal systems and extend the phase out of the program for two additional years commencing in 2034.

  •  $3B over 13 years for funding of the Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program (critical regional priorities and Indigenous-led projects); Smart Grid Program (support of electricity grid innovation); and to create new investments for Canada’s offshore wind potential.

  • $500M over 10 years for the Strategic Innovation Fund to support the development and application of clean technologies. The program will direct $1.5B of existing funds to projects in clean technologies, critical minerals, and industrial transformation.

  • Extend reduced corporate tax rates for Zero-Emission Technology manufacturers of 4.5% for small business and 7.5% for other businesses by another 3 years to 2034.

With so many opportunities available, it’s important to find just the right fit for your particular business goals and see where your clean, green investment can be strongest for growth and for our environmental future.
